Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Federation?

A GP Federation is a group of general practices or surgeries working together. The remit of a GP Federation is generally to share responsibility for delivering high quality, patient-focussed services for its communities.

What will the Federation actually do?

The Federation will be working with other NHS organisations to ensure that General Practice in Halton continues to deliver high quality services. It will also deliver a number of community-based services, like GP Extra, providing care and services closer to where people live. We will keep the public updated of all the services the Federation will be delivering.

What is GP Extra?

GP Extra is a GP Extended Hours service designed to provide patients with appointments outside core general practice hours for routine care. The service is available every day of the week. Please look at the Our Services section for more information.

How Do I Make An Appointment At GP Extra?

All appointments are booked by contacting your current GP practice in the usual way. When you are booking an appointment, the receptionist will offer a choice of appointment either at your own practice or at the GP Extra service. It is entirely your choice about which appointment you book.

Who Is Running The Federation?

The Federation is run by local GPs and Practice Managers from Halton. Check out the Our People section to find out more about them.

What’s In It For Me?

One of the primary aims of the Federation is to improve services for local people. We will deliver more local services, making it easier for you to access the services and buildings where the services are taking place.

If I’m not registered at one of the Practices in GP Health Connect, how does it affect me?

If you aren’t registered with the practice in GP Health Connect, unfortunately you won’t be able to access some of the services being delivered. If you are interested in joining one of the practices, please contact the Practice Manager at the practice you are interested in. Their contact details are included in the About Us section of the website.

Who Else Is Doing This?

Different groups of GPs are setting up Federations across the NHS, this isn’t happening only in Halton. Each Federation offers different services in order to meet the needs of its local population.

Why Are You Doing This? Everything Was Working Fine Before Wasn’t It?

We recognise that General Practice in Halton continues to offer high quality services and we want to make sure that continues.

Why Aren’t All GP Practices In Halton Doing This?

All GP Practices in Halton are a member of a GP Federation.

Will GP Practices Be Closing?

No practices will be closing.

Will Patients Have To Go To A Different Practice?

A patient will only go to another practice if it is their choice. For example, the GP Extra service is run for Runcorn population from Heath Road Medical Centre (close to the Town Hall in Runcorn). It is entirely your choice if you want to use this service.

Will Some GPs Lose Their Jobs?

No. We want the Federation to support General Practice and one of our aims is to increase the number of GPs locally.
